Austal was recently awarded a U.S. Navy contract for ten Independence Class Littoral Combat Ships. These vessels are in addition to one previously delivered, USS Independence (LCS 2), and one under construction, USS Coronado (LCS 4)
Austal is the prime contractor for the Joint High Speed Vessel Program. Five of these 103-metre catamarans have been contracted by the U.S. Navy with options for a further 5 vessels. The JHSV can transport troops and their equipment, support humanitarian relief efforts, operate in shallow waters and reach speeds greater than 35 knots fully loaded. The vessels will be a joint-use platform operated by both the U.S. Army and Navy.
